a great mezze
heaps of tabbouleh
freshly chopped parsley, softened bulgur wheat,
puckering lemon puddles, vine-grown tomatoes

towers of dolmas
each grape leaf picked by hand,
wrapped with an auntie’s love,
stuffed with rice and vegetables, and canned tomato paste

depleted, drained,
imports blocked, tomato vines crushed

Wren Horne-Sarkees (she/her) is a poet and playwright based in Auburn, Massachusetts, living on Nipmuc and Agawam lands. Her work is greatly inspired by her experiences as an Armenian-Iraqi. In her free time, she can be found birdwatching, reading, and helping lead her town trivia team.
